Switched On: Firstsite’s Refurbishment Enhances Spaces for Creativity and Collaboration

Smarter, brighter, more flexible—Firstsite’s refreshed spaces are ready for ideas and imaginations to flourish.

After three years of planning, collaboration, and a lot of careful rewiring, Firstsite’s major building upgrade – the Firstsite Shining Project – is now complete.

Funded by a £696,524 grant from Arts Council England’s Capital Investment Programme, this ambitious project has not only made the building more energy efficient and environmentally responsible, but also more accessible, more comfortable, and more reflective of its original architectural vision.

At the heart of this transformation is a renewed sense of welcome—for visitors, artists, staff, and the many community groups and businesses who use Firstsite’s spaces each day.

Lighting Up
One of the most visible changes is the installation of a new lighting system. Outdated fittings, many in place for over a decade, have been replaced with high-efficiency LED units. These not only significantly reduce Firstsite’s carbon footprint but also enhance the presentation of artworks and architectural features, bringing clarity and character to every space.

A Clearer Picture
In the cinema, technical upgrades have improved both visitor experience and operational flexibility. While the new step lighting, screen and projector offer an
improved experience for filmgoers, the introduction of audio description devices means people with visual impairments can now access films more fully.

Firstsite’s AV system has been completely rewired, opening up new possibilities for live broadcasts and events that need high-quality sound and projection.

Everyday Spaces, Thoughtfully Refreshed
Firstsite’s studio and meeting spaces have been upgraded to support their growing and varied use. Durable new flooring has replaced surfaces worn down by over a decade of continuous use—from workshops and community events to professional training days and family programmes.

Hearing loop provisions have also been expanded beyond the cinema, with new installations in studios and meeting rooms. These updates make Firstsite a more accessible and comfortable setting for informal gatherings and business use alike.

Looking Ahead
The Shining Project has transformed Firstsite—but these changes are about more than infrastructure. They’ve created spaces that are welcoming, adaptable, and fit for the many ways communities,  partners and hire clients use them.

A place where you can spend quiet time with incredible artworks to spark your imagination, or come together with others to learn, share ideas, and celebrate.
